Cinema of Resistance: Feminism Against Fundamentalism

  • Resurrection Church 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd San Diego United States (map)

A series of free, public screenings of movies to inspire, enlighten, and heal us in such a time as this.

As anti-feminist White Christian Nationalists attempt to roll back the progress the women's liberation movement has made here in the United States, what can women and their allies learn from the theocratic takeover of Muslim countries like Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, and Iran?

This month we will screen the animated adaptation of a critically acclaimed biographical graphic novel about a young woman coming of age during the Islamic Revolution in Iran. Then our panel of experts will discuss with us the ongoing cultural struggle between feminism and religious fundamentalisms of all kinds.

Guest speakers

Headliner: Dr. Bahar Davary Professor of Religious Studies at University of San Diego and author of the book "Women and the Qur'an"

Dr. Bettina Tate Pedersen Professor of Literature and Women's Studies at Point Loma Nazarene University, author of "Being Feminist, Being Christian"

Dr. Rati Kumar Assistant Professor of Communications at San Diego State University and affiliated faculty with SDSU's Institute for Dialogue and Social Justice

Join us at 7pm (doors 6:30) on the second Friday of each month for these free, public screenings, followed by discussion. All are welcome. Click here to reserve your spot, and follow the series to be kept in the loop!
