1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture
A Community Film Screening & Conversation at Resurrection Ocean Beach
For many people, the intersection of faith and LGBTQIA+ inclusion has been marked by confusion, pain, and difficult questions. What if one of the most influential biblical interpretations of the last century was rooted in a translation decision that deserves another look?
Join us at Resurrection Ocean Beach for a special screening of the acclaimed documentary 1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture, followed by a thoughtful panel conversation exploring faith, Scripture, and the lived experiences of LGBTQ+ Christians.
Whether you're exploring these questions personally, supporting a loved one, or simply seeking to better understand the conversation, this evening is an opportunity to learn, listen, and engage with compassion.
About the Film
1946: The Mistranslation That Shifted a Culture investigates the historical introduction of the word "homosexual" into an English Bible translation in 1946 and examines the far-reaching impact that translation has had on the Church, politics, culture, and LGBTQIA+ people over the past century.
Rather than telling people what to think, the documentary invites viewers into a thoughtful exploration of biblical scholarship, history, and the human stories that continue to shape this conversation today.
Panel Conversation
Following the film, we'll host a live conversation with special guests:
Colby Martin
Molly Downs-Stoller
The Rev. Shelly Shepherd
Together they'll reflect on Scripture, theology, pastoral care, and what it means to create communities where LGBTQIA+ people can fully participate in the life of the Church.
